FO: Baby Pilot-Style Hat

This weekend is my cousin's baby's 1st birthday.  (I did the research and apparently she is my first cousin, once removed.)  Unfortunately, I live half a state away and won't be able to be there for the celebration, so I'll be mailing little Sophie's hat to her.

I picked this pilot-style hat pattern on a whim one night and got to work.  Overall, the pattern was very easy to follow.  At first I thought the hat would be huge for a baby's head, but once it started to take shape it made much more sense.  I only changed the decrease at the very crown to every round rather than every other so that I would avoid the pointed hat look.  I also just winged it for creating ear pull strings by braiding three strands of yarn on each.

I quite like the finished project, and even though I'm sure Sophie will have much more exciting presents than a knitted hat, hopefully it will help keep her cute little ears warm through the rest of spring.  Oh, and of course I did a custom printable card. :)
